Seminal Canadian Recommendations for Evidence Based Examination of Neonates for Retinopathy of Prematurity (SCREEN-ROP)
Slated for Publication: Sabri K, Shivananda, S., Selvitella A, Easterbrook, B, Seidlitz, W, Lee, SK. Refining evidence-based retinopathy of prematurity screening guidelines: The SCREENROP Study. Paediatrics & Child Health. 2019
Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) is a potentially blinding eye disease which affects prematurely born children in the neonatal period. Every year, thousands of newborns are examined across Canada in order to capture the few hundred who develop severe ROP. Those with severe disease require urgent treatment in order to prevent blindness. Currently there are no universally accepted national guidelines regarding which neonates should be screened for ROP. SCREEN-ROP is the first national study of its kind and aims to set the first, evidence-based Canadian guidelines for screening newborns for ROP.
